What Is a Museum Volunteer?
A volunteer at MAM can be a docent (tour guide) or a regular volunteer. Examples of regular volunteer positions are: briefers/greeters, librarians, gift shop aides, exhibit research and construction, photography, events, facilities maintenance, carpentry, event parking, wheeled-vehicle maintenance, event coordinators, scouting liaisons, school liaisons, advertising, marketing, fundraising, summer camp instructors and aides, etc. It takes many volunteer skills and willing hands to be a successful museum, and the benefits are amazing.
When your application has been received and reviewed, you will be contacted to come in for an interview (required) and to complete forms for a police background check (government-issued photo ID required). Youth volunteers (ages 14-17) also complete a youth application which requires three personal references in lieu of the background check. Upon successful completion of the interview, your training will begin immediately! In addition, new volunteer orientations are conducted bi-monthly to round out your training while giving you a chance to meet other new volunteers. At the orientation, you will also be assigned to a senior volunteer who will mentor you through your initial training period.
